the igor is quietly beavering away on the vanquish hollow, as ever it is of prime importance that the fretboard is well saturated in lemon oil
2
the beaudeaux has had all the cracks from an unexpected meeting with the floor repaired.. we hope.. she just needs strings and tension to see how she copes under the strain..
3
now, the frets are massive, and I really mean huge.. I remove about a millimeter of waste before it looks like we may get an acceptable action!
4
ok, flat frets give really crappy intonation and that won’t do so here they’re all re-profiled..
5
the igor, doing short shifts while his NEW bike is repaired??!?, strings up the Vanquish Hollow.. on that subject I’m thinking of renaming that model the ‘Chimera’.. got a trademark infringement on my hands with this one..
6
each fret is highly polished..
7
and the strings are strung.. and the cracks hold, though of course that was expected!!
8
back to some real work..
9
the eight string, Scorpion model, is rubbed down to 1500 grit wet and dry
10
all over..
11
the igors next engineering job..
12
but until he gets there there are some daily jobs to get on with, the oiling of this elm topped RF slim..
13
I spend a happy hour buffing the Scorpion guitar to a high gloss
14
mmm, an aluminium billet..
15
shiny eight stringer..
16
very very shiny, and also incredibly comfortable, these ergonomic curves really help her fit like a glove!
17
the fretboard has been on a long, hard journey and is scraped clean of all the accumulated debris with a sharp chisel
18
the fretboard is then masked off
19
frets leveled
20
and finally the Sonokelling rosewood fretboard is brought to life with a generous application of lemon oil..
21
the hidden brass bridge is recessed into the top
22
and the graph tech string saver saddles are then installed
23
as are the light-weight Schaller tuners, the body of the tuner is made of nylon.. cool..
24
next up the custom wound eight string pickups are put in place, directly mounted to the body for that little bit of extra tone..
25
brass nut shaped and polished up
26
and installed.. the squared off design elements in this guitar.. ie the nut and the pickups, were specified by the customer and are not the way I will be making other versions of this model.. or any other fanned fret guitar for that matter!  Each to his own though and we pride ourselves on trying anything you want in a custom guitar!
27
some local art.. very very impressive!
28
we check in with the igor and he’s made a lot of aluminium shavings… or swarf!!  (good word that one!)
29
now, a delivery of some pots from the states and we get on with wiring Steinars extended range bass.. though it turns out that the pots delivered were the wrong ones anyway!!  Doh!
31
nonetheless, I motor on through and wire in the scatterwound humbucker..
32
mmm.. nice going igor!
33
next up igor rubs down the Fred’s slim..
34
and I go all the way with the erb, stereo piezo out splitting the bass and treble outputs..
35
finally the backplate, a flamed ash veneer, is put in place
36
along with the control knobs of course..
37
I need to make a brass shoe to protect the tuners..
38
while the igor starts putting the elm tops hardware in..
39
a new toy arrives.. she will save us many many hours in engineering
40
now, the strap buttons are bolted in place using machine screws and threaded inserts.. we stop at nothing to get a great instrument!
41
it’s almost a pity to put this strap button here but..
42
it does the job!!  ..now how does one play it??
43
the fact that she weighs in at only 2.5 kilograms really helps though!
44
strings for the elm.. not sure who smells though?.. igor??
45
now, back to the Scorpion..
46
I’m not happy with the aesthetics yet so make a set of rosewood pickup surrounds
47
not your usual fare though, 4mm magnets are inlaid in the corners
48
and in the body..
49
and after oiling the rings
50
they are clicked in place.. an elegant touch of design if I do say so myself!
All my best to you and yours!
