the 13th day of July 2010

This Descendant has had her last spec change, the client no longer want a sustainer, and since the sustainers control holes had all been drilled out already we’re going to use a flame maple veneer.. over the flame maple top!

this is, however, a chance to use the vacuum press

now, the new paf hollow needs a new back, and it will be a flame maple one..

here it is carefully jointed and glued..

my thoughts now swing back to the twins..

slightly distracted though by the stunning result from the veneer press..

so impressed that we end up going through the same process on this stock soft-top.. a lovely macassar ebony veneer over a carved spruce top..

the igor has been having fun in the depths of engineering polishing up some of the batch of new control knobs.. I’m very very happy with how these are turning out!

Since I’m getting back into doing some actual woodwork I need some sharp planes..

a start is made with the twins as their backs are planed flat

another custom knob or two.. more curved this time and a special order..

..and more for the igor to polish.. he he!

ok, the paf hollow’s new back is roughed out on the band saw

planed flat.. at least on the inside gluing surface

the topography of the ergonomic guitar.. holes are drilled to a specific depth in the three lines marked out here

as you carve to the bottom of the drill hole you know how far away from the other side of the wood you are..

and the same process happens on the inside of the back giving a 3mm thickness for most of the vibrating surface..

igor now has a massive job to do when I’m not around.. there’s a lot of difficult prep work to do on this model!

next up the pin router is set up so that the router bit goes to within 5mm of the nubbin inserted in the table

and the control cavities of the twins are routed to match the carving of the fronts..

igor is also moving on apace with his first full build.. a baritone, here he routes out the tone chambers..

and then he glued on the book-matched flame maple top..

I start creating some custom flamed binding from this veneer..

some shorter lengths of wenge are cut to size using the guillotine..

here is the binding layout for the fronts of the twins..

a custom guide for the pin router is turned on the engineering lathe and routing begins..

they are now ready for the first section of binding.. I can’t wait to see these exotic beauties under lacquer!
All my best to you and yours!
