we begin work with Archies custom Robert Fripp Hollow-body..
the excess Elm is bandsawed away from the top..
and everything is smoothed off with a handplane..
to create a stable surface from which to run the router
as I cut the binding channel..
the pickup cavities are pre-drilled to make it easier on the router..
and, along with the picup cavities the control plate recesses are routed into the one piece pearwood back..
the binding work is begun.. it’s always easier to start at this end of the guitar..
and finish here..
I can’t wait to get this one finished!!
the ending of repair job.. excess glue from the reglued bridge is removed
the saddle adjusted to give a good action
and, after polishing the frets and fingerboard, she is strung up again..
this left-handed neck is roughed out
planed nice and even
before, using a sharp knife, I mark out where the deep set neck tenon will be..
pillar drill’s brought back in to service
and the neck pocket is routed out..
a vaquely PRS ish guitar based on our plagiarist model as a basis..
a design session qwith a new custom begins, helpfully, with one of his first (and favourite) guitars.. an Aria Pro II..
which prompts me to bring out the first guitar I built.. funny looking back at how proud I was of this piece of..?
the design begins with a fanned fretting system.. designed to accomodate the customers smaller hands and wrist..
the bridge will have to be custom made to fit around the fanned frets.. using piezo saddles to drive the custom built piezo/MIDI/sustainer system..
various Wizard pickups are brought out to figure out which look we are after..
and the body designing begins in earnest..
and ends here.. lovely!!
though I still have to redesign the RF headstock to fit the new fretting system..
a Robin in my veg patch .. very seasonal, no?
the next day, and another new customer comes needing some design work.. this time we’re looking at one of his least favourite axes!! Light, thin and pretty but she sounds thin and weedy, feels insubstantial..
and this pissy bridge, though it looks cool, rattles away like a baby on speed..
consider this my monthly rant on guitar manufacturers who over-complicate things unneccessarily!!! Bah Humbug!!!
his new guitar design will be a work in progress over the next few weeks, but starts here!
Merry Christmas to all!!
